During the 1981 baseball strike of 36 years ago, a baseball writer ranked the greatest baseball of all time up to that point…and Willie Mays was chosen #1.

 
No wonder. He hit 660 home runs, still #5 on the list. He’s tied with Stan (The Man) Musial and Hank Aaron for most All-Star game appearances with 24 games each. He won a dozen Golden Gloves. His catch of Vic Wertz’s long fly ball was the highlight of the 1954 World Series won by the New York Giants over my Cleveeeeeeeeland Indians.
 
How’d he get his nickname? Well, he couldn’t remember peoples’ names, so he’d just call somebody “Say Hey.”
