Faith Hill: Holding On and Letting Go

“I Was 19 Once,” She Says

Is the secret to Faith Hill’s enduring beauty the three teenage girls she’s raised?

It sounds like it might be. Because in the new issue of New Beauty, Hill opens up about getting back on the road after taking care of things at home for nearly a decade, and taking care of herself along the way.

And with two of her daughters leaving the nest already, Hill has had to get used to the idea that they might pursue paths she doesn’t think they should, but she would never tell them no.

“Tim (McGraw) and I know what it takes to really do this for a living, but, as a parent, you don’t want to stand in the way of their dreams,” Hill said.

“It’s been one of the most difficult things for me as a mom — especially as a mom of all girls. You want to protect them; you want to make sure they aren’t disappointed.

“I’m certain all parents would say that about their kids, but there is a point you have to remember, ‘I was 19 once, and I remember the passion and the drive I had, and I just have to let them go and do it,’” she said.

Sometimes, she added, it’s better to let children go through things in their own way instead of telling them to do things your way.

But no matter what kind of future Gracie, Maggie and Audrey have ahead of them, they will approach it the way Hill and McGraw always have: with a strong work ethic and zero expectations.

“The one thing we stress is that you don’t get things handed to you on a silver platter,” she said, “you have to work for the things you want. They know it takes hard work. You don’t just arrive.”
